Tottenham Liverpool match preview

After English showdown in the final of Europa League the time has come for the great final of the Champions League between teams who ended up at the fourth and second place in the Premier League this season. Neither of them won a title in the league or two English Cups, so all what was left is this match. This will be the first final of the Champions League for Tottenham, and the second consecutive one for Liverpool so this team is well versed in winning the title of European champions. Liverpool won both their league matches this season by 2-1.

Tottenham

Tottenham won practically all titles in its history except the one of the European champion. We should add that its years of fame lay deep in the past but with this final Tottenham is back at the grand scene. The Spurs don’t want to end all this with the final but they want the title they have never won before. They had a thorny path toward the final and their opponents in the group were Barcelona and Inter, while later on they eliminated Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax.

They had lost four matches in the Champions League and it was especially dramatic in the semi-finals against Ajax. They lost at home 1-0 and had -2 in the 2nd leg, but the Spurs managed then to score three goals and reach the final. The Spurs spent a larger part of the season at the third place but they ended up at the fourth, which was enough for a new season in the Champions League. They had many problems with injuries in the second part of season but now the situation is much better as the team’s first striker H. Kane is back in the starting line-up.

Probable lineups Tottenham: Lloris – Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose – Sissoko, Wanyama – L. Moura, Eriksen, Son – H. Kane

Liverpool

Liverpool has won five titles of European champions, although it won it the last time in 2005. The Reds were finalists last year but they couldn’t parry to Real and they were left empty handed. They did better this season since they played well in the English Premier League besides success in the Champions League. They didn’t win the English championship but they cannot blame themselves as they won even 97 points and had lost just once, right to Manchester City that in the end won one point more.

Regarding the Champions League, Liverpool made a heroic comeback in the semi-finals when it eliminated Barcelona. The Reds lost the 1st leg played at Camp Nou by 3-0 but they managed to win the rematch by 4-0 despite playing without Salah and Firmino. Origi and Wijnaldum were heroes of the match as both scored by two goals. Wijnaldum came off the bench only in the second half when he replaced injured Robertson and that turned out very well for Liverpool. Salah and Firmino are ready for the final, but Keita is nos as he is injured.

Probable lineups Liverpool: Alisson – Alexander-Arnold, J. Matip, va Dijk, Robertson – Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum – M. Salah, R. Firmino, S. Mane

Verdict:

Each team made a heroic comeback in the semi-finals but Liverpool’s opponent was stronger. Liverpool showed more than Tottenham throughout the season, especially so in the Premier League and that is why is the favourite to win the final that will be played in Madrid. Liverpool lost the final last year and has learned the lesson, while Tottenham has no experienced with playing in final matches.
